Andréi Platónov (1899-1951), especialista en regadíos hasta 1928, autor de obras negativamente criticadas a partir de 1929, padre de un un hijo fallecido a los diecisiete años tras su regreso del Gulag, corresponsal de prensa durante la II Guerra Mundial, enfermo de tuberculosis desde 1944, barrendero y tramoyista en los últimos años de su vida, escribía sobre la libertad como deber de todo hombre, sobre la insoportable carga que supone ser libre y sobre la dialéctica de la pasión que impregna nuestro mundo. Autor de obras como Las esclusas de Epifán, su primer libro, y La
excavación, que, como Chevengur, Platónov nunca llegó a ver publicada. A lo largo de veinte años Platónov corrigió, con interrupciones, Chevengur, pero no llegó a redactar las pruebas definitivas. La obra se publicaría por primera vez en Rusia a principios de 1988, en Francia en 1996, y la traducción que ahora ofrecemos es la primera que se edita en castellano. Confluyen en Chevengur la atroz experiencia colectiva de la terrible sequía que golpeó las regiones más ricas en cereales en la primera mitad de la década de 1920, la idea de que el hombre es un ser metafísico y la visión apocalíptica —profundamente rusa— que no concibe la existencia de grandes esperanzas sin los holocaustos que las acompañan.

Terra baixa és un drama en prosa d’Àngel Guimerà que planteja magistralment l’oposició entre el pla corromput (la terra baixa) i la muntanya incontaminada (la terra alta).
El protagonista, en Manelic, un home senzill i primitiu, és cridat per casar-se amb la Marta, una noia de la terra baixa que fins aleshores havia estat obligada a mantenir relacions íntimes amb el seu amo, en Sebastià, el qual pretén continuar-les més enllà del que per a ell és un matrimoni de conveniència. La Marta, envilida per la relació forçada amb en Sebastià, troba en l’amor d’en Manelic la força per esdevenir lliure i trencar la dependència que la subjectava a en Sebastià. Aquest enfrontament de la dona amb l’autoritat de l’amo, en un món que encara es regeix per les relacions de poder, desencadena un drama que acaba amb la mort d’en Sebastià a mans d’en Manelic.
En el rerefons de l’obra es percep l’ambient de la societat rural a la Catalunya de l’època, on els camperols havien de suportar una feixuga dependència dels amos de les terres. Contra aquesta situació, Guimerà crea el mite de la Terra Alta, un món incontaminat, on no existeix el mal i d’on surt l’heroi que s’oposa a la corrupció de la terra baixa i venç el mal.
